What Was a Mechanical Watchman Clock?

Definition: A mechanical watchman clock is a key-wound timepiece carried by a guard; at each post a numbered key is inserted to stamp the current time, producing a physical record of the round.

The device dates back to the 19th century and was widely used in factories, ports, railways and large estates well into the 20th century. In English it is also called a "detective clock" or "guard clock" because its purpose was to detect whether a watchman had actually made his rounds.

How It Worked

  1. Each post on the route held a fixed key with a unique number.
  2. The guard carried the clock and, on arriving at a post, inserted that post key into the clock.
  3. The clock stamped the post number and the current time onto a dial or a paper tape inside the device.
  4. At the end of the shift the supervisor opened the clock and read the stamped record to confirm the round.
Because the key numbers were fixed to locations, the stamped tape showed not just that the clock was wound, but which posts were visited and when.

Why It Was Replaced

  • Paper records can be altered or backfilled, so the evidence was only as trustworthy as the person holding the clock.
  • No automatic exception report, a missed post was only spotted by a human reading the tape.
  • Keys wore out and could be swapped between posts, undermining the location proof.

Electronic guard tour systems kept the same idea, prove presence at fixed points in a set order, but replaced the paper tape with a tamper-resistant, timestamped electronic record. The iButton contact system that followed was the direct descendant of this concept.
