Why durability is the real buying criterion
A guard tour system exists to make patrol verifiable. Without it, a guard can sleep through a shift and no one knows. With it, every missed round is recorded and visible to a supervisor.
That creates an incentive some guards act on: disable the reader, then tell the supervisor it broke. The device must keep working even when someone is trying to break it.
How it is built to survive
Tamper resistance is designed in from the first sketch, not added later. Looking at the explosion view, protection is layered from the core outward:
- Mainboard — wrapped in multiple layers of soft silicone.
- Hard outer shell.
- Outer soft-leather buffer that absorbs impact before it reaches the shell.
New-generation readers go further: the screws are hidden, removing easy points to pry the unit open, and a silicone sheet separates the mainboard and battery from the outside world. That single layer both cushions shock and blocks water from reaching the circuitry.

Waterproof in practice: real-world tests
IP68 is verified, not assumed. The same reader is rinsed under a running tap, fully submerged, and left outdoors in the rain — and it keeps reading the checkpoint button every time.
Crush test: a car drives over it
Crush resistance is what separates a real guard tour reader from a toy. A car is driven directly over the unit — after the tyre rolls off, it still reads the checkpoint.
How to read a durability claim
When comparing readers, ask for the test, not just the adjective. 'Rugged' means little; 'readable after a 10 m drop and a car rollover, sealed to IP68' means the supplier has actually built and verified it.
